If you’re planning to travel solo for the winter break, there are plenty of options for you to explore and choose for a memorable getaway filled with new discoveries and adventure. Start packing, plan those itineraries and make a list with any of the top picks for this year.

1. Prague, Czech Republic

This charming city with its cobbled streets and Christmas cheer is a good place to go to if you’re looking for a break away from places filled with tourists. You’ll be able to explore properly without having to worry about overtly crowded attractions. Don’t miss the beautiful architecture and dreamy cafes (such as Choco café where you’ll get to pick different kinds of comforting hot chocolate). Besides the snow and Prague’s fairytale-like charm, its Christmas markets will leave you enchanted for a long time. This is especially a good time to go if you want to avoid chilly destinations and want to be able to walk around a lot.  Your jaw will drop when you spot all the gorgeous carvings and ancient architecture at Angkor Wat. The fact that the Khmer people worked on these without modern tools will make you shake your head in disbelief, admiring the hard work and raw talent on display. You’ll also get a chance to get a taste of local customs, traditions and lots of great food. Don’t forget to try bamboo sticky rice, Khmer noodles, and Cambodian BBQ with a generous helping of Amok fish.

3. Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok is where you should go if shopping is your sweet, sweet poison. There are scores of options available for shopaholics. It’s a great budget destination and gold mines like the Platinum Mall will make you very happy. Don’t forget to check out the Chatuchak weekend market, which has thousands of stalls. Do exercise basic caution and stay alert on the streets to avoid falling prey to pickpocketing.  Visit the Grand Palace and the giant reclining Buddha in Wat Pho and spend your evenings sipping local beer and gorging on noodles, exploring the bustling city by day and partying at night. 4. Hong Kong

An extremely safe destination, visit Hong Kong for its pleasant December weather and plenty of gorgeous sights.  Observe the city from one of its highest points at The Peak, learn to use its super-efficient MTR system to get around the city and sample delicious cuisine at its local shops. Do pay a visit to the chaotic and charming market at Mong Kok, admire the neon lights, party hard at Lan Kwai Fong’s gorgeous bars and marvel at the night lights near Victoria Harbour. Don’t forget to add Disneyland and Ocean Park to your itinerary for a walk down memory lane.

5. Quebec City, Canada

This one’s a treasure waiting to be discovered. There are lots of things to do here – from marveling at its historic architecture to going back in time with its entertaining street performers and beautiful horse-drawn carriages.  It’s a great idea to perpetually to go on a walking tour in Quebec since it’s extremely safe.  You’ll be blown away by the history and culture.
