Jamus Lim Addresses Anchorvale's Issues Amidst Concerns of Being Low-Priority as Opposition Ward

After Workers’ Party Member of Parliament Jamus Lim (Sengkang GRC) wrote about the poor conditions at Anchorvale Isles, a cluster that is part of his ward, one netizen opined that “as an opposition ward, it will be the last of priority for maintenance, repair, and improvements.”

Assoc Prof Lim wrote in a Sunday (Mar 27) Facebook post that despite Anchorvale Isles being around only for the past seven years or so, the area has had “a number of estate issues ranging from loose tiles, peeling paint, mildew on walls, deformed boardwalk strips, cracks in the playground flooring, and even a rather decrepit-looking entrance sign!”

The MP listed the possible reasons why this is so: “the quality of construction, neglect in maintenance, a microclimate that encourages more rapid deterioration, or greater usage due to its proximity to a large public hospital.”

However, he wrote that ever since Anchorvale Isles has been under their care, the WP team has endeavoured to carry out the improvements they’ve learned are necessary as they’ve heard the residents' feedback.

But Assoc Prof Lim added that “major works can only be rolled out during the cyclical repairs and redecoration (R&R) process” which fortunately is scheduled for this year.

“We are hopeful that we will be able to dramatically spruce up the condition of this cluster then. In the meantime, the estate team continues to work on maintaining the cleanliness of the common areas, and execute piecemeal repairs along the way,” he added.

One netizen, who also lives in a WP held GRC, Aljunied, commented the following: “I think that as an opposition ward, it will be the last of priority for maintenance, repair and improvements probably to piss the voters for voting opposition. We have seen the same case as Aljunied.”

Another netizen, someone who actually lives at Anchorvale Isles, affirmed that “cleanliness in the area has improved a lot” recently.

Other commenters, who appear to live in the area as well, pointed out other issues.
