"I feel like many victims these days don't know how to speak up" — Ya Hui's tuition teacher inappropriately touched her during her school days; she shares her story
SINGAPORE: In a recent interview with 8World, actress Ya Hui expressed that her ex-tutor back in her school days had inappropriately touched her when she answered questions correctly.
She admitted: “You know when you want to encourage someone you’ll just pat them on the back right? But he’d touch me here (gesturing to the side of her chest).” She added that when she was in secondary school, she knew it was wrong because it had happened many times.
“Why does he have to touch me there? I find it very uncomfortable,” Ya Hui explained. She then told her mom about the incident, who then confronted the teacher. Learning from her previous experience, Ya Hui declared: “I feel like many victims these days don’t know how to speak up or who to tell, but I think they shouldn't keep quiet about it.” Ya Hui continued by saying she still encounters these unfortunate actions after entering show business. She had clients who loved putting their hands around her during photo opportunities during major events, which still made her uncomfortable. When stuck in this kind of situation, Ya Hui shared: “Now, wherever someone does that, I’ll go ‘Sorry I need to adjust my outfit’ and move away’” The actress declared: “When they [guys] put their hands around our shoulder or waist, girls shouldn’t feel okay about it. If a guy respects you, he wouldn’t do that.” In other news, Ya Hui stars in Mediacorp’s new drama, My One and Only. The drama is about the character Ma Limin, who wants to become a real estate developer alongside her son, Hao Renpin, and offer a one-stop property purchase and renovation service with her husband, Hao Haojian.
